SANDUSKY
Register file photo/LUKE WARK Motorcycles of all shapes and sizes line up in the "motorcycles-only" parking lot as riders begin to arrive for the 2008 kickoff of Ohio Bike Week at the Erie County Fairgrounds.
It's time to kick start Ohio Bike Week.
The event, which hit some roadblocks when key sponsor Roeder Harley-Davidson closed, has drawn support from the business community and is scheduled to begin Friday. Daily events will run through June 14.
Bike Week organizers announced Roeder Harley-Davidson, 5316 Milan Road, has reopened as RoederCycles of Sandusky and will serve as the head-quarters for Ohio Bike Week.
It was unclear, however, whether the rebranded business will remain open after Bike Week.
"It's largely an initiative to keep the entire campus active during the event," said Steve Ernst, organizer of Ohio Bike Week.
"We don't really have any set plans for after Bike Week," Julie Roeder said. "We just felt like we had a commitment to have the campus of the dealership as active as possible, given the importance of the event to the community."
The dealership also will have a customer service office open to answer questions about outstanding service issues. It will offer Easyriders apparel and accessories and will display motorcycles from the Easyriders Centerfold Tour, Ernst said.
RoederCycles will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the event except for June 14th, when it will be open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Roeder said.
Phone calls are not being taken at the store at present, Roeder said.
A full schedule of events for Ohio Bike Week is in this week's issue of Funcoast and posted on FUNCOAST.COM.
In addition, Funcoast's Twitter feed will provide up-to-the minute updates about Ohio Bike Week events, said Sara Kaplow, editor of Funcoast.com.
"We're trying not to get too annoying with it, but we're trying to keep people informed," she said.
Funcoast's Twitter feed is available at www.twitter.com/funcoast/.
Lake Erie Shores and Islands Welcome Center is also doing its best to promote the event and provide information to bikers coming to Erie County, said Dawn Weinhardt, managing director of the agency.
The visitor center will be open seven days a week and offers rally guides -- small pocket handbooks with a schedule of the events.
"We'll have them available in our office, if anyone's interested in stopping by," Weinhardt said.
It also offers information on destination rides, "options for people if they've got a couple of hours and just want to check out the scenery," Weinhardt said.
For example, they can ride to Marblehead Lighthouse, taking a road that runs along the bay and the lake.
